Instructor
Justin Gates

Justin has trained in traditional arts such as Kyokushin karate, Taekwondo and 5 Animal Kung Fu. But also practiced non traditional styles of  Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) and Escrima (stick fighting).

While looking for something different and practical he was introduced to Krav Maga in 2009 and realized that this was what he'd been searching for.

Even though he respects and reveres all the arts the practical and modern mindset of Krav Maga is what inspired him to become an instructor.

Having been in street fights  and more times than not against multiple attackers, he felt that Krav Maga addressed an area of need that traditional systems at that time just didn't address. The concept of dealing with more than one opponent is a given with Krav Maga as is the practicality of how they deal with threats from the gun, knife and stick, all threats that Justin had faced before he was 20 years old. So the idea of a system that dealt with all of these was a no brainer.

He became a certified Level 1 instructor at Krav Maga Worldwide HQ in LA  in 2011 and  Level 2 certified at Krav Maga Maryland in 2012. From 2011 until 2014 he taught at Advanced World Martial Arts Systems in Kernersville NC, and at  Octagon  Krav Maga and MMA in Greensboro NC until moving to Wilmmington in December 2014.

Since then he has affiliated with the Fit to Fight® organization headquartered in Charlotte NC and has been teaching  FTF Krav Maga to students  in Wilmington and coaching individual clients through personal training.

krav maga self defense

Krav Maga is a self-defense system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) that consists of a wide combination of techniques sourced from aikido, judo, boxing and wrestling, along with realistic fight training.

Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks. It was derived from street-fighting skills developed by Hungarian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld, who made use of his training as a boxer and wrestler as a means of defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in the mid-to-late 1930s.
